New Carbon Hardtail

Cube Reaction C:62 Racehardtail Review

There are many carbon hardtails available. However, the Cube Reaction is considered one of the most attractive options in the extensive range. Does this also apply to the new edition of the race hardtail, which will be available from 2025?

Cube Reaction C:62 Carbon Hardtail on test
The new Cube Reaction C:62 has the same frame shape and aesthetics as the more expensive Cube Phenix, but rides with a completely unique geometry.

With the Cube Phenix, Germany’s largest bike manufacturer has already released a new high-end hardtail in the summer of 2024. Now, the Bavarians at Cube are expanding their range in this segment with the Cube Reaction, positioned at a lower price point. While the Phenix models start at 5399 €, the Reaction carbon hardtails are available for under 2000 €. The Pro version shown here costs 1,999 € and offers an attractive overall package with a weight of 10.8 kilograms.

Additionally, there are Reaction aluminum models available for under 1000 €, although these are primarily designed for everyday use rather than sporty endeavors. It’s intriguing that the Reaction carbon models look very similar to the expensive Phenix hardtails, yet have a completely unique geometry. What is the strategy behind this approach?

Cube Reaction seatpost
The clamp for seatposts with a diameter of 27.2 mm is integrated into the seat tube and protected from dust and dirt by a cover.
Cube Reaction Cable Routing
The cables on the Cube Reaction C:62 are routed through the headset, making them barely visible from the rider's perspective.

Geometry and Sizes of the Cube Reaction

The difference to the Phenix top models is already noticeable in the size selection. While the Phenix comes in only 4 sizes, the Reaction C:62 is available in 6 sizes from XS to XXL. The smallest size XS rolls on small 27.5-inch wheels. Only from size S onwards are 29er tires used. Overall, the frame tends to be smaller than other models, thanks to the seat clamp integrated into the seat tube.

A longer head tube and a shorter main frame make the sitting position of the Reaction much more upright than the Phenix. With a 100 mm long stem (from size L), it goes against the trend of making the handling even more direct in cross country bikes. Stems with 70 mm or even less are now common even in the Cross Country World Cup.

Cube Reaction C:62 Rear Triangle
The Cube Reaction features a delicate rear triangle and is equipped with the UDH derailleur hanger, making it compatible with Sram's Transmission groupset.
Cube Reaction bottom bracket
Cube opts for the Pressfit standard for the bottom bracket. This setup is particularly stiff but requires some skill in the workshop.

Cube doesn't follow the trend towards 120 mm of travel and a dropper post as standard. With 100 mm at the front, the focus here remains on lightweight construction.

The stylish carbon handlebar-stem unit is not yet available on the Reaction models. It is only available on the significantly more expensive Phenix models. The handlebar with slight sweep emphasizes the

Same look, same manufacturer. Naturally, the comparison between Cube Phenix and Reaction comes to mind. And we have made this comparison for you. But in most cases, this won’t be a real purchasing decision. Because the cheapest Phenix and the most expensive Reaction are separated by over 2000 €. However, with this comparison, you can nicely compare the differences in equipment and geometry one-to-one.

It’s more realistic to choose between the Cube Reaction and a bike from another manufacturer. Therefore, we’ve decided to list various carbon hardtails in the price range of around €3000. Also worth considering with the classic 100 mm concept are the Scott Scale and the Orbea Alma. The Merida Big Nine is also available for under €3000. However, more intriguing is the modern approach that Rose with the PDQ or Mondraker with the Chrono Carbon DC are taking. Both bikes come with 120 mm travel and a dropper post out of the box, giving them a significantly broader range of use. In a large system comparison, we’ve already examined the pros and cons of such a concept in detail and concluded that this approach is actually the better way.

Mondraker Chrono DC
The Spaniards from Mondraker are also taking a modern approach with their Chrono Carbon DC, featuring a dropper post and 120 mm of travel.

Benefits of the Cube Phenix

  • light
  • good value for money
  • stylish look

Disadvantages of the Cube Fenix

  • rigid seatpost
  • only 100 mm travel
  • Dropper post difficult to retrofit (27.2 mm)

Conclusion on the Cube Reaction Carbon Hardtail

The Cube Reaction C:62 Carbon Hardtail favors a geometry and setup that is significantly less race-oriented compared to the Phenix models. Even though the appearance is similar, the more upright seating position is aimed at tour riders. With the rigid seat post and 100 mm travel, it still adheres to a classic concept that prioritizes lightweight construction over rugged terrain capability. Consequently, the weights of the Reaction models are very impressive, but their range of applications could broaden.
