Can you make the world’s most successful cross-country bike even better? Scott is taking on that challenge, pushing system integration and frame features to a whole new level. But are the Swiss redefining race-day performance yet again—or are they taking the concept too far? A deep dive into kinematics, stiffness numbers, and trail feel delivers the unfiltered truth about the latest stroke of genius on the XC scene.

The Scott Spark has been a defining force in modern XC racing, making 120 mm of travel and dropper posts World Cup-standard. While big-name competitors like the Specialized Epic World Cup are also trying to tuck the shock out of sight, Scott is already taking the next step. The new Scott Spark RC sets completely new visual benchmarks and, at first glance, looks almost like a hardtail.

We take a closer look at what kind of trick engineering Scott has to pull off for maximum integration. To do that, we didn’t just strip the bike down and analyze it—we also put it through extensive real-world testing. Was 5 years of development time worth it for this bike, or has the hype fizzled since Nino Schurter hung up his race number?

That was Nino Schurter’s original bike from five years ago. This bike revolutionized the sport and bike design.

The Swiss engineers have completely ditched the upright shock in the seat tube (as on the previous model) and laid the rear shock flat in front of the bottom bracket. The result of that call is what’s arguably the sleekest, cleanest-looking full-suspension bike ever.

The rocker link developed for this setup spins on a press-fit bearing in the main frame, but houses a BSA-threaded BB interface on the inside—meaning the rocker link’s pivot and the crank spindle share the exact same axis.

The Kinematics Analysis: The Secret of the Inverted Flex Pivot

To make this complex linkage happen, the predecessor’s well-known flex-pivot rear end was literally flipped upside down. The main pivot now sits above the rocker, which kinematically turns the upper stay into the chainstay and the lower one into the seatstay. Scott is keeping the layout details under wraps, but we still took a stab at a kinematics analysis.

Scott has pretty much flipped the rear end on its head with the new frame design. The pivot bearing in the upper seatstay is physically not there. It represents the part of the rear triangle that starts to flex as you get deeper into the travel, near bottom-out.

On the descents, the rear end works completely unrestrained through the first 80% of its travel, without the carbon fibers having to twist.

The new rear end is all about efficiency. The harder you lay down power on the pedals, the less the back end moves.

Our kinematics analysis—and, even more telling, cycling the rear end through its travel with the shock removed—shows that the back end moves completely freely through the first 80 percent of the travel. Only in the last 20 percent does the material flex of the carbon stays subtly come into play—a clear contrast to competitors like the current Orbea Oiz or the Canyon Lux World Cup, which exhibit noticeably more flex/hinge angle in the rear triangle.

Suspension Setup and Shock Performance: A Delicate Tightrope Walk

The kinematics churn out a high leverage ratio paired with a pronounced end-stroke progression. In practice, that means the shock needs relatively high air pressure to hit your desired sag.

Our analysis shows that Scott and Orbea run an almost identical leverage ratio through the second half of the travel. But Scott starts out with a significantly higher leverage ratio off the top.

Dialing in the setup takes a bit of finesse. The bike needs slightly more air pressure than you might be used to on other models to get sag set correctly.

Clever: Since you can’t see the shock, there’s an external sag indicator at the bottom bracket.

You absolutely need to take your time dialing in the suspension. The SAG indicator on the rocker is a smart, essential aid and you can easily access the air valve, but it takes big pressure changes in the shock to actually move the sag.

The Spark RC consistently keeps its character on the firm, racey side. In our testing, the best balance of small-bump sensitivity and efficiency showed up at a little over 25 percent SAG; if you set the rear end up firmer, the progression noticeably limits how much travel you can use.

The new Scott Spark feels super sensitive off the top, but it’s no couch once you get deep into the travel.

Four of the eight available build kits come stock with the electronic RockShox <strong>Flight Attendant</strong> system, while the mechanical models rely on the proven TwinLoc lever. Because of the high leverage ratio early in the travel, the oil damping in lockout has a hard time keeping up, which is why under a full-gas sprint a tiny, visually noticeable amount of movement remains in the system.

That movement has nothing to do with drivetrain-induced bob. The anti-squat values stay above 100 percent at all times and in every gear. The movement comes from the rider’s choppy pedal stroke.

The bigger the gear, the more stable the rear end feels under power. With anti-squat numbers well north of 100%, Scott makes it clear: this bike is a full-on race machine.

Lab Check: Stiffness Numbers Put to the Test Bench

A real eye-opener showed up on our standardized stiffness test rig: when it comes to frame stiffness, the new model doesn’t hit the benchmark numbers of its legendary predecessor. Scott deliberately dials back the super-stiff layup in favor of the highly integrated frame design, but it’s still right in the ballpark where plenty of its competitors are playing.

In a head-to-head shootout, the current Orbea Oiz sits at a measurably stiffer level. The Canyon Lux World Cup is on a comparable level to the new Scott Spark RC. Out on the trail, you’ll notice this difference less when you’re stomping on the pedals and more in steering precision through brutally rock-strewn sections, when big lateral loads are pushing on the chassis.

Geometry and ergonomics: an uncompromising focus on forward drive

With an effective top tube of 636 mm and a reach of almost 480 mm in size L for our test, the geometry is seriously long. Paired with the head tube shortened to 95 mm, this results in an uncompromisingly racy riding position that squeezes maximum efficiency out of rider and bike. This rig is a straight-up racer and doesn’t deliver any laid-back cruiser comfort. In the geometry chart, the figures in parentheses after the actual value always show the change versus the previous model.

This radical evolution is a direct takeaway from the pro race circuit, where athletes like Nino Schurter previously had to run extreme negative-rise stems to compensate for the head tube stack. With a stock 60 mm stem, the ultra-long front end is reined in, which underscores the Swiss brand’s no-nonsense race focus.

Frame features and serviceability: dialed down to the smallest detail

Scott offers the frame in three carbon layup levels, with the HMX version on our size L test bike tipping the scales at a respectable 1,700 g including all protectors and hardware. The premium HMX SL version drops another 150 g, while the HMF base layup comes in about 200 g heavier.

The Scott Spark World Cup Evo in size L, without pedals and with tubeless tires mounted, weighs 10.8 kg.

The maintenance-focused details are next-level: all hoses and cables are routed cleanly through the headset, which makes workshop time massively easier thanks to a novel bolted-together design for all individual components. Finally, no more loose parts flying around. On top of that, an integrated steering stop reliably protects the thin-walled top tube from damage in the event of a crash.

The downtube hides a roomy storage compartment for a spare tube and pump, while a mini-tool sits within easy reach under the tool-free, magnetically secured shock cover. Rounding out the package are mounts for two large water bottles, double-sealed bearings, and exclusive CeramicSpeed rear-end bearings backed by a lifetime warranty on the top-tier models.

Practice Check: Chasing PRs

On the trail, the Scott Spark RC proves to be a razor-sharp high-speed weapon. Thanks to the slack 65.9-degree head angle and the longer wheelbase, the bike tracks extremely stable and begs you to leave the brakes wide open on the descents.

The low center of gravity pays off in the handling, and despite the complex internal cable routing the bike stays absolutely rattle-free. The lightweight Syncros wheelset (1,190 g) with carbon spokes delivers explosive acceleration. But the stock Maxxis Aspen tires hit their traction limits quickly when it’s wet.

We had the Scott Spark RC World Cup Evo in for testing. At €11,500, it’s definitely a more exclusive build spec. The Team Issue model comes in at €7,299 and also rolls out with Flight Attendant suspension and electronic shifting. If you’re not into electronics, the Scott Spark RC Pro model is also €7,299 and runs the TwinLoc suspension setup. Both models tip the scales at just over 11 kg.

The predecessor’s do-it-all DNA has been trimmed back slightly in favor of a radically performance-focused setup—a trade-off ambitious racers and style-conscious riders will celebrate, thanks to the killer looks and razor-sharp handling. Tour riders will have to wait and see whether Scott also rolls out a version without the “RC” badge, with a bit more travel.
